"A Clean Well Lighted Place" Essay

"A Clean Well Lighted Place"

Picture yourself in a pitch black room, lonely, sad, and cold, no one can comfort, speak, or listen to you. A clean well lighted place shows that when you are lonely and darkness prevails the only way to fend it off is through the light of kindness.

The café in "A Clean Well Lighted" place is very symbolic because of the fact that there are so many objects and events that take place inside the building. For instance the bar that the old waiter went to, was compared to the café because the both of them had very interesting characteristics. For instance the bar was unclean and dim lighted, compared to the café which was well lighted, and neat.

Though symbols may be vital the relations between "Nighthawks" and A clean well lighted place. When I read “A clean well lighted place” I immediately thought of “nighthawks” because both of these pictured a well lighted place and customer(s). In both pieces outside the cafés are dark, and gloomy. But in “a clean well lighted place” there is only one customer and hes is a lonely old man, versus In “Nighthawks” there are few customers and they are all happy. Also in “Nighthawks” there is only one waiter that we see and this waiter looks happy and content . Meanwhile in “A Clean Well Lighted Place” there are two waiters but only one of them actually wants to be there and the other on is caring and kind.

Though “Nighthawks” and “A Clean Well Lighted Place” have much similarities and differences, what we really need to pay attention to is the shadows. In “A Clean Well Lighted Place” there are many shadows that we see. Such as the shadow that represents darkness and despair, that is located all around the café. Though the shadow around the café is massive compared to the café, the café is a stronghold for good and light. Because when people are in the café the older waiter gives his hostility to anyone that steps foot in that café, but the younger waiter only focuses on the money and how late he gets to sleep at night.

When darkness prevails the only way to defeat it is through the light and good of kindness , that is exactly what “A Clean Well Lighted Place” shows.
